Michael Alig is an Escort!

Michael called last night and was very excited about his new job at Eastern State Correctional! He had wanted to get into the Sign Language class but found the waiting list much too long, so he joined the Escort Program! Yes, Michael is an Escort for a heavily bearded man in his 50’s! Now that’s usually much older than Michael likes, but in Prison there’s not a lot of choices, especially when the “Client” as Michael called him was assigned to him!
 
OK, I’ll stop the word play and on with the facts! At Eastern Correctional, they have special programs and housing for inmates who are Sensorially Disabled. Michael’s Client has a vision problem; (and many health problems) and although he’s not totally blind (he wears glasses with lens about an inch thick!) he needs help with most of his daily routine. Michael walks him to and from wherever he needs to be, basically helps him as needed. One of the very important jobs is reading to him, especially if he gets a letter, which he rarely does.
 
Luckily Michael’s client is not Homophobic, and had actually taken a course in prison on HIV and would like to teach Michael all about it! Michael is very happy to have a wonderful prison job, and a client with a very humorous intellect!
 
Michael didn’t get this job easily; as his back round of drug abuse and his charge would usually disqualify him he was told. Apparently it’s difficult to find good Inmate Escorts that won’t take advantage of or abuse a disabled inmate. He was also told that empathy was strongly needed! Once he was told that he knew this was the job for him! Michael wants to help people, and he’s finally being given the chance inside prison to do this! One reason he got this job was “to show them” he could do it because he’s very empathetic and caring and will prove it!

I have found it’s rare in NY to find a good prison, so I feel I should promote the good if I slander the bad.

I was asking him so many questions about "his man" but we only had 30 minutes to talk and I needed to get his food shopping list too!  I will be visiting Michael on Wednesday so I will ask more questions! "His Man" already knows about me and is asking Michael questions! I told Michael that if it's possible to bring him to the visiting room when I come then he should! He doesn't get any visitors so he's a lonely guy. I'm glad that Michael is finally getting to show in Prison that he is kind, compassionate, and does have empathy! This job will show the Parole Board the real person Michael Alig is, and that he’s ready to be released.
