Michael calm in the Southport SHU

I finally received a letter from Michael today. It was written while he was in the SHU at Eastern State Prison. He figures with Albany cutting his time after all his appeals are heard, and if he behaves, he’ll be doing from 9 to 18 months in the SHU at Southport.

Luckily Michael is still on the medications they put him on finally, and he has gotten used to the side effects. They pretty much keep him calm, almost numb, so he is able to deal with the situation he’s in. I have been telling him for years to ask for medication since the Prison system was not giving him the substance abuse treatment he needs.

Ironically this article (see below) showed up on the Web about how the NY Prison system uses SHU Cells for addicts who have a slip when they should receive treatment. Michael has even heard about it and is looking for any information on how he can be helped. I’m sending out the entire study for him to read.
