Michael Alig Settled in at Southport Correctional

Michael has now done around 2 months SHU time at Southport Correctional Facility, and has finally settled in as well as can be expected. A few friends have ordered him the only things he can have, magazines, newspaper subscriptions, and books. I saw a book on Amazon that had not been out for too long, so I took a chance and ordered it. I was amazed at how happy it made Michael when I told him I orderedChemical Cowboys: The DEA's Secret Mission to Hunt Down a Notorious Ecstasy Kingpin.” I had no idea he wanted to read it! Now if the Prison will give it to him, as through tracking I know it has been there over a week when Michael last said he didn’t receive it yet. That’s typical for prison, and different prisons take different amounts of time to go through the mail and give the inmates their packages.

Michael has been lucky to have people visiting him, lucky because he’s quite far from NYC. Mary from Florida was in NY and got to see him, and she has plans to see him a couple more times. In her first visit Michael tried hard to put on a happy front since it was the first time she met him. He finally did show his true feelings, and Mary saw how badly this prison is affecting him. She was great for him though, and fed him his favorite foods. Michael claims to have lost 20 lbs, as he’s not allowed to buy or receive any extra food there.

Jen has made that long journey to help lift Michael’s spirits, and has planned to be a regular monthly visitor. She has, and continues to help out Michael in more ways than anyone knows! I don’t know what Michael would do without her!

Ester, who plans to be a monthly visitor, made the journey this month and reports that Michael was in good spirits.

Teresa, who lives the closest to Michael now (2 & ½ hour drive) is my “go to” girl to visit when I have an opening or cancellation! She was great this month, changing her visiting day so that Michael could have the maximum amount of visits. She stuffed him with good foods from the vending machines and reports that Michael claims to have lost 25 pounds from the lack of edible food available to him.
