I have a question about what kind of things Michael can receive. For example, if I found something online that I wanted to send him, could I just order it as a gift and have it sent to his address directly from the website? Or is that stuff not allowed?

Yes, you order from online. Much easier that way! But, there are many rules to what he can have, so please ask me questions, and if you'd like to tell me the details I'll let you know if it will make it in! He has to pay to ship the rejects, or they are thrown away.

Thank you so much! It's so cool of you to keep up this site and answer these questions!

What are the rules? Is there anything specifically he CAN'T get? What are these rejects he has to pay for?

It is easier to figure out what he can have. Start at the dept of corrections web site.

       http://www.docs.state.ny.us/FamilyGuide/allowableitems.html

When a package is received at the prison and something is not allowed, he must make an instant decision where it is to go, meaning he has to know an address in his head. He knows mine, so I usually get the rejects to save for him unless it's food or something that's really cheap to replace. He has to pay for the postage and insurance, and I usually don't receive it for 3-4 weeks! I know the mail doesn't take that long, but from the prison it does!

He can also donate it (who knows where it goes) or throw it away. (where food goes, probably)

The items I get I save for him, or I can send them back to the person that bought them if they ask me to. At this point Michael will have lots of lotions for when he's released, as those are the toughest to get into the prison.

There are prison stores online that know most of the prison rules, so you can order from them and 98% of the items will get to Michael. Go to the prisontalk web site, as they maintain a list of vendors online.

Sorry to say that you must be 18 to write to an inmate. When will you turn 18? It's nice you asked about stamp money, as many people ask, but very few send! Any amount can be sent, but in reality you should send enough so he can respond to you. One dollar buys him 2 stamps, but people also forget about the cost of paper, pens, and printer cartridges. When you are able to write, throwing a dollar in the envelope will ensure he can afford to write back!

I'm really excited that I just found this. Do you think he gets too many letters to respond to EVERY one? I mean I heard he tries to write back to everyone, but I also heard he gets a limited amount of stamps? Oh wait.. I was gonna send him money for that. or could I just send him stamps and money?

I would love more than anything in the world to visit him, but I live in southern cali and have no way of affording something like that.
I'm 20 so I guess I'm old enough to write, which is a releif. =] How do they know that, they just check your info or what?

Michael tries to respond to every letter, but sometimes can be delayed by lack of stamps, and right now being transferred will delay his mail for weeks. Please do not send stamps, as he will not get them, they are contraband. He's allowed to buy them in prison, that's why sending a dollar for 2 stamps is the best thing to do.

I don't think they check ages from people that write, unless they read the mail and see that Michael knows someone is underage, then he's in trouble.

Thank you for sharing all this information. I wrote to Michael and received a response today. I hadn't thought of the price of stamps. I am including money for him to purchase stamps. Thanks to your site I would have never considered doing it. So thanks so much for the information.

I'm happy that you are sending some stamp money, as he'll never ask, but I know what he's going through financially.  The money really adds up with the amount of mail he gets, and he really wants to write back to everyone.
