Michael Alig settling in at Franklin Correctional

Michael is settling in well at Franklin Correctional Facility way up north in Malone NY. He's still in "Reception" but does have the same facilities that all the other Dorms have. For Michael, that means cooking and eating well, as he's already sharing food and cooking with others.  They made a nice Xmas Eve meal tonight, and plan on making a nice Xmas day meal as well! He does miss the privacy his Cell at Coxsackie provided even though it was so small he could barely turn around in it. Here, beds are out in the open with only waist high "cubicle material" separating the bunk beds.

The days are long and tiring compared to Coxsackie. Everyone is up at 5:45am, and last phones calls end at 11pm so of course Michael is taking advantage of calling friends! It's nice to hear from him so often, especially because he's doing well!

Everything Michael has to do there requires him to walk outdoors quite a ways! (yes, it's very cold there ) He's off walking for medication times, meals, and the gym. Maybe soon even a job! He has Orientation on Monday and should be moved to another building unless he gets a job in his current Dorm.

I want to say thank you to all that sent him Holiday cards, as he said he has received a lot of them! Once again, he says to tell everyone sorry, as he has not been allowed to buy stamps yet, but when he does he'll catch up with answering letters.

Here is his new address;

    Oh good! I was hoping that he would be able to enjoy his Christmas. I didn't know that he wouldn't get his own personal room. It's all like dorm style? Interesting. Well, hopefully he likes his dorm mates where ever he ends ups.
    He must be freezing having to be outside so much! On the news this morning, they were talking about a blizzard all over the east coast. I hope that he's got warm clothes to wear & not just those super thin jail jumpsuit things.
    Thanks for the Christmas update!!

    It's nice to hear that he's able to eat better (and cook!) and get outside more, even if it means being in the cold!

    I understand how he feels about the privacy... that must take some getting used to, but overall it sounds like he's in a better situation, and I'm happy for him!

    Thanks for the update!

      Well, some special food was allowed in, but not  some of the things he really was looking forward to. Many other inmates could not believe how cruel the prison was in their decision and voiced it. But, Michael still had a much better Holiday than he would have had in Coxsackie.

    Hey, I just recently wrote Michael a letter this past Monday. I'm just curious if you knew how long it typically takes letters to get to him.

      It depends on where you mail it from. On the East Coast, he'll have it in 2 to 4 days.

      As someone who's been writing him for awhile, I can just say, even if it takes awhile, be patient, 'cause Michael is awesome about writing back.

    So I just ordered something to be sent to Michael at Franklin... should that be fine, or should I expect a "return to sender?"

      Depends what it is! If the item is rejected, he has 10 seconds to tell them to mail it back, throw it out, or donate it.
