Positive and Prejudice at Franklin
With the
"honeymoon" period being over for Michael at Franklin Correctional,
he is starting to see that not all things are 100% rosy. It's still much better
than Coxsackie, but as usual he has to deal with prejudice. It seemed to take
longer than usual for most to realize that he is gay, but now that they know,
some inmates put pressure on others to not hang out with him. Hopefully with
new people arriving as others leave, there will be a few not scared to hang out
with Michael.
On a happy note,
Michael finally got a single cubicle! He got one more quickly than others
because he's a Porter. The best thing about a Single is that he has room to
keep his typewriter out. While in a double (2 people living in the same amount of space) there's barely enough room to get to
the bed!
Michael is very happy with all the letters he's been getting, especially from new people! It's great that the 1st timers are taking that step and writing to him, thank you!

Aw, I kind of saw that coming (prejudice), but was hoping that it wouldn't be too bad. But I guess that's prison for ya! Hopefully, the gay prejudice is just an initial thing. Once people actually get to know Michael- who he REALLY IS, beyond the fact the he prefers men (because there's so much more to him than that), they will realize what a great person he is.
Glad to hear that he got a cubicle and can use his typewriter more often. I was getting lots of handwritten letters b/c his dorm mates were complaining about the noise. So that's good news! Wish Michael well as always! Sooo excited to see him next month!!

That's really sad that anyone would be "afraid" to hang out with Michael because of his sexual preference.

That's real sad that, STILL, in this day and age, people are prejudiced. Well, they're missing out on making friends with someone who seems like a great guy!

I just heard that Michael got into trouble again for drugs! Is this true? That means he can be stuck in prison for another 2-4 years I heard. I hope this isn't true! What is his release date? I'm going crazy.

Michael is not into any trouble, and has not used drugs in almost 2 years. Who told you he did drugs? I talk to him daily so I'm always up to date. He has a chance to get out Nov 2011 on Conditional Release. Once again it's based on Good Time (he has enough) but Albany must approve it. They were the ones who said no this past year.

Oh jeez, Michael would never even fathom taking drugs and failing a drug test again! He is trying his best to stay positive and motivated, especially after the bad news last year. Michael wants to get out more than anything right now and I really believe that he would never do anything to screw it up! He's on best behavior.

Hi. I wrote to him a few years ago then he got transferred and I never was able to write him back. He had mentioned he would love to get some help on stamps and stationary so I was wondering how I could send him some money to help out? Any Details?

It's very easy to send him money for stamps! Just get him a money order, make sure to write his name and DIN# on it, also your name and address need to be on it. Put in in the same envelope that you send him a letter in. I would mention in the letter that you sent a money order along, just in case! You can send a personal check as well, either way it would be a great help to him so he can continue to buy stamps to respond to all the letters he gets! The envelope must also have your full name and return address or it will be rejected. Here's his info;

If I put a few dollars in with my letter since that was the first time I've sent money to a prison, will the whole letter be rejected or will they just take the money out and still give him the letter?

Nothing should be rejected unless there's gang or sexual pictures within the letter. I once sent a map printout from the internet with a letter, and got a warning letter saying they removed the map, but he got the letter. He had no idea what was rejected though, just that something was. This prison seems to reject more mail than Coxsackie, but no one has told me if cash was rejected.

Then after you posted his new address I sent a letter to that one about a week and a half ago but havent heard back yet :[ do you think I should try writing a new letter and resending? or should I just wait a while longer? Give him a little more time if you want, as he had one weekend (week before last) where he was very sick throwing up for 2 days, so he probably got behind. Always feel free to write another though in case it got lost!

I just got a letter from Michael recently and I can't read it! lol It's all a scribble. I'm not sending another letter just to get a bunch of scribbling in return. If I had a scanner I'd let you try to read it. It's about 60% worse than the letters in here! I can write with my feet better than that.

It's up to you! I don't know when it was written, but he can now use his typewriter so I'm surprised that you received a handwritten letter. My handwriting is bad, so I can never complain about others!

Personally, I love Michael's handwriting! It's a script of his own, for sure. Sometimes it takes some decoding, but it's just so much more personal to me when I get handwritten letters. I write kind of scribbly myself, so maybe I have a certain knack for reading other people's scribbles.

I like his handwriting too. I got my first letter two weeks ago. He has the same cursive-print mix to his handwriting that I do. I didn't find it hard to read. I'd give him another chance before you write him off. No pun intended, haha.

Steve Lewis is the friend of Michaels that's claiming he's not getting out in 2011! The guy that was posting crap in Facebook about Michael not getting out told me Steve told him this 2 months ago. I researched it and found a post by Steve Lewis in some popular blog where he did claim this. Why would Steve say this? Pookie Freeze is the guy that just told me. Steve Lewis is a hack! Some friend. IDIOT.

I majored in Criminal Justice in NY, that and talking to Michael 5-7 times a week means I get it from the horses mouth. I understand what it says on the DOC web site and how it differs, but it never had on there that Michael would be re-seen by by the CR Board once he finished his drug program at Coxsackie, but guess what? He was. It happened just as Michael said it would.
When he got into trouble, I remember very well as I arrived at Eastern State Prison with 35 lbs of food for him which I left with. That was around 4/1/09. That is when his last trouble started and he ended up in Southport in the long term "Hole" What was worse, that his CR Hearing ended up being there! Since Michael didn't have any other troubles in prison except for drugs, they wanted to see him get thru the drug program, and if he did, they promised to see him then, rather than at Southport.
Normally when someone goes for their Good time and the Board gives them enough back to be released right away, 99.9% of the time it's approved by Albany but Michael was not, and we'll never know why as they don't give a reason. Most people believe it's because who Michael is and the Press he's gotten.
I'm sorry if you believe someone else, but Michael will see the CR Board this November, then if they say yes, it once again goes to Albany for approval. Michael is not waiting on the Parole Board as they don't let many people out, especially ones with high profile crimes. You will only find the truth on this blog, with all info coming from Michael.

7/20/12 is the earliest Micheal can get out. His conditional release is 11/30/13. 11/30/16 is the latest he can get out. Michael is either lying about his early release so people will keep sending him money and visiting or he's dreaming. I researched the heck out oif this and I was informed that he has no release set for nov 2011. Even with good time I'm being told by a reliable source it's 2012. So he had to do something to get that extra 9-10 months. I WISH I WAS WRONG.

Who is your "reliable source." Sometimes people are not as reliable as they seem to be. There's people out there that will say bad things about me, but the best way to find out is to write to Michael and ask him who is reliable to get info from. Michael doesn't ask people for money, plus he would need money for a lot longer if he gets out when you say.
He doesn't have a release set for 11/11, as he has to see the CR Board then, as if receives his good time back (remember, he's earning more every day he's there so he doesn't need as much back) and if he's approved he'd get out right away, so it could happen.
Besides the NYDOC web site, where else did you "research the heck out of this?"

Let me back-up Lovepurple here, as I too, communicate with Michael regularly. First of all, why would Michael lie about his earliest release date? What good would that do him? Yeah, he enjoys getting letters (and NEVER asks for money or gifts), but being released from prison is what Michael wants most!! He will see the CR board later this year and I firmly believe that this time, he will get out, pending Albany's decision, of course. I will always think positive on his behalf. He DOES have a good chance. He has plenty of good time and (despite becoming very sick), he's also confident that he will get good news this year. I will continue to encourage these positive thoughts.
You should never believe everything you read on the internet, espeically on Facebook. One site will say something and another site will say something completely different.
Michael Alig is not liar. You clearly have not "researched the heck" out of this because you haven't spoken to Michael about it.

Thank you Melissa! I have an interesting update! Michael was not happy hearing about this gossip, so he spoke to Steve tonight and found out who "Sean" is! He's what I call a "Whackadoodle" Sean is a trouble maker, all the way back in the club kid days, and now by spreading lies. Michael and Steve know who he is, and Steve is on board and knows when Michael will most likely get out, which will be 11/11.
What is nice now, is that Michael has a small circle of trusted friends who actively support him. Support may mean someone to talk to, to write to, someone to come visit him, basicly to keep him going mentally. Melissa, you and I are 2 of those people. We don't expect anything back from Michael, as that's how friendship works.
I'm doing this Blog so people who discover Michael (and there's more every day) can get accurate and honest info, no drama! I had enough drama on those "Boards" that used to exist.
I'm glad that drama is over.

Ugh, drama is terrible, especially when Michael can't even defend himself against it. We are here doing our best to encourage him, and here's a person trying to drag him down. I knew that there had to be something up with this Sean dude. How heartless to be planting rumors!
I am so grateful that I found your blog and moreso grateful that I found another person who HONESTLY cares about Michael (not just a "fan"). I cannot wait for the day when Michael is free and we can all meetup together. In the mean time, I am absolutely elated to see him in two weeks!!! I hope that I can bring smiles to his darling face.

This happens from time to time, and I won't let negative language on my Blog so we may not see all of "Sean's" comments. I've seen a lot over the years, but with the bad I also find the good. I have been able to pick out the good ones even though I take my time. If Michael and I both feel positive about someone then we're usually safe, as we are with you Melissa! You act out of caring, and that shows with your actions.

First of all, I can't believe that people come on this blog and write such bad things about Michael. Michael is a good and caring person and he doesn't deserve to be treated that way. So, all you negative people, you should just stay off this blog!
Second, I would like to thank you Lovepurple for this wonderful blog! I read it all the time and I'm always excited to get news about Micheal. I've wrote him a few letters in the past couple of months but I still haven't received a reply. But, I live in Canada so I understand that it will probably cost him more to send letters.
Finally, I had a few questions. I was just wondering if Micheal needed something? Maybe a book or magazine? I've already sent him a few money orders to help him with mailing supplies. But, is there anything else he would like? Also, I live right on the Canada-U.S. border and I could go visit him! I'm not sure if he likes to meet new people but I would love to go visit him at some point. I really truly care about him and I will continue writing him letters of encouragement!

I'm more upset that Michael didn't write back to you! A few things could have happened if it was around his transfer, as for 2 weeks he had nothing. Any mail he had in the days before he moved he had to read and throw out. Please write again and let me know if he doesn't write back.
I let a couple of the nasty comments on, as it's a good way to inform everyone what has been happening over the years. People Michael doesn't even know ( how can he if they don't say their real name?) target a friend and bad mouth Michael to get them to abandon him. Every few months it happens, and it's not pleasant. The other comments sean wrote I didn't approve because they got worse, so that's it for "sean."

As far as books, he likes true crime about serial killers. Magazines, if there's something in Canada that's not published in the USA, that would something he'd like. Could be entertainment, fashion, clubs, ect.
If you could visit that would be great! He has not had a visit yet, except for the interview. He's fine with new people, as after the 1st few minutes it is like you've known him for years! He has a way of making anyone feel comfortable, and has a great memory and tells some great stories of the good old days!

Even if I didn't receive a letter from Michael I will definitely continue writing to him. I know that he gets tons of letters so it's probably not easy answering every single one of them.
However, I would just like to make sure that he is getting the money orders that I have been sending him. I sent him 2 since December (I just hope that the prison is giving him these money orders!).
If I send him a book, can I send it directly to him from Amazon.com?

That's so cool I also LOVE true crime novels and whatnot. I'm going to look around as I also am a Canadian and see what I can find for him when I was young and stupid I got in trouble too and I know how nice it is to really sink into a book it takes you to a new world really perfect escape

I will be looking into why you have not gotten a reply either! It may be that he can't stamp foriegn mail himself, so then he'd be held mercy to the prison staff's schedule which includes taking the money from his account for postage. Any extra work that needs to be completed by prison staff always takes extra time!

michael and i communicate regularly and i believe we are on the same page. i believe michael will be out sooner than later. i never confide in people that i don't completely trust and they are few and there are no sean's on that list. i don't talk behind people's backs as i like to be in their faces and looking into their eyes when i cut them down. there is no need for gossip . truth is one and we need not whisper it. we all know the truth, he will get out if not on this date on another close at hand. again i believe sooner. although michael and i have had our differences i am sure he is on the right track, is rehabilitated and mentally sound. he is the old michael before the drugs and other pressures turned him into a party monster. he is the michael i called friend and call friend now again. if anyone wants to attribute things i say just contact me and i'll give them fresh quotes, sound bites and news. it has been an emotional roller coaster and yes i was mad at mike at times and expressed my feelings on my blog and to him face to face. michael will come out sometime soon and i believe will be a productive member of society, i only ask that those expecting him to lead a rebirth of what was leave him to be the person he is now. the past was what it was and is chock full of wonderful as well as horrible. it certainly affects the now and the future but it cannot be revisited. it cannot be recreated. michael will create other incredible things, new things and he must have room and support of people who he can trust. im seeing him soon and will tell him of all the love and the hate as well. realities are in order here.

I went to my first rave/themed party when I was 33. I know that thse parties are a bit different than what Michael had going on in NYC. I can say for certain that I met some incredible people. I was never pushed to try any of the "favors" and I was not made to feel bad at all (unlike some regular parties). My girls and I love the movie of course, but I have the shockumentary all ready to go for them as well.
My family was raised with a love of music, and many types.We were raised to look beneath the outer surfaces of people, never take them at face value.. I have passed this logic onto my daughters as well. My 16 yr old daughter (JUST TURNED IN NOV) seems to be very drawn to all the music and ,costumes(CLARA is her favorite), we have talked very frankly about the movie, and other things off the internet. We feel that Michael lost his way when he was involved in that horrible confrontation with Angel. I feel like I need to write him and say a big THANK YOU to him for teaching my daughters(23, 16 and 11)in so many ways about the high times and the low times, caused by unfortunate addictions. Showing his sweet soul when he and Keoki had their "FAMILY" with their Cat. His love of his friends and how he loved them all in so many different, but nonetheless,special ways. My 16 yr old, felt heartbroken when she watched how others treated him. After she saw PARTY MONSTER, she went on line to look up any sites to check up on him. I guess some would say I am an idiot for letting my girls see these movies/shockumentaries, but I believe that my girls (As well as myself)have more appreciation for anyone that has had such a tortured soul, and bounced back. He is like a guardian of sorts. ALL the kids/adults that he has helped without ever knowing it.<3 <3......, I don't know if I have said anything that sounds like someone who is babbling like a groupie!I'm just a grateful mom trying to say thank you.
I guess that we are more accepting of anyone that is different, we have had many alternative living ppl around for the last 20ish yrs. We are a diehard DANCE family!
My ex is a racist jerk! Telling my girls they cant be friends with ppl because they are gay, or Black,or other races! , He tried to take her and run off. All because I let two of her best friends stay over (they are Gay).We believe that no one has a right to bully, beat, or torment anyone else!! If we can ever get to where Michaels is being held, we would love to just hang for visitation and tell him how much he has helped me show my girls how easy it is to start out with the best intentions, and in a mere snap of a finger your life has been turned upside down. Please tell him that we just adore him, and will be thrilled once he is out of that dreadful place. We live in upstate NY. We would love to get to see him before he goes back to NYC! And bless you for having this kind of site, and keeping in touch with him for all these years he has been "away"

He is doing better, it was a short thing, bad, but short. It's better to send a money order (your full name and addy and his name and DIN # on it) as sending cash may get there, but you never know!

Ok. Well I've spent alot of time reading this blog about Michael and I was wondering why nobody ever has any new pics of him when they claim to have seen Michael during their visits with him in prison? Are visitors allowed to bring a camera or cell phone? It'd be nice to see a recent pic of him from this year. I was on another blog and saw a pic of Michael with two people and he was wearing a prison uniform and a t-shirt. It really was him. Does anyone have a new pic? I also wrote Michael again and he never responded yet. I'm a little bummed out over it. I won't write him at this new prison he's in when he never wrote me back at the last prison he was located at. He must get alot of letters I guess.

I just read your comment to Michael over the phone and he didn't remember, but he does keeps track of most letters that come in so will check to see if one came in from "Danny."
If he received a letter while still in Coxsackie around a week before he moved to Franklin, he was made to read it and then throw it (and all mail) away then since he would be in transit and that's prison policy. He hopes you'll write to him at Franklin.
He did call me back after checking and he didn't get a letter from "Danny" so let me know if you wrote it under a different name. I won't publish your name online. He doesn't get too much mail from guys, so he really does make a great effort to write back, so he hopes to hear from you.
No one can bring a camera or cell phone into a prison, as it's a big "no no!" One friend several years ago took a picture in the parking lot once with his cell phone, and that led to him being taken outside after already being in the visit with Michael to show security the cell phone and the picture that he took. They "assume" when pictures are taken of the outside of a prison an escape is being planned.
On some visiting days pictures are offered and are taken by an inmate who has that job, and the inmate can purchase the chance to take a photo with his visitor when it's announced. I actually did that once with the promise that I would not show the picture to anyone since Michael didn't look his "best." Maybe his visitor this weekend can talk him into a picture, lets hope!

I've asked Michael if we can take a picture when I visit, but he wasn't exactly thrilled about the idea. If we do take a picture, I don't think he would want me posting it online. We'll see.

Where's Michael going to live once he does get out of prison? Does he ever tell you where he wants to live? What's he going to do with his life? I wonder if he has anywhere lined up to live because I heard prisoners get a small check from the state and off they go. I want people to help him out. Can a person send him a paid calling card so he can call friends?

Michael will live in NYC with a good friend when he's released.
He's constantly thinking about what he'll do when he's out, and luckily he has more options than most. He's a painter and has plenty of work to show. He's currently in editing mode of his book which should be released after he's released! He has many ideas that he may explore in the entertainment field, so we'll have to wait and see what success he has!
No prisoners can receive phone cards, as the people he calls pays. The way it works is that he has an approved phone list of friends (15 friends is the max) he can call (no cell phone numbers allowed) and those people must set up an account with the prison phone company by putting money down with a credit card. Each time he calls, you must press a button to allow the call and pay for it.
So, are you going to write to him? Make sure you put your full name and return address on the envelope or the prison will NOT give him the letter.

I can't believe he didn't get my last letter! I'm so bummed out.I wrote him at his newest prison 4 weeks ago.My name is Danny Milbrandt and I don't mind sharing my name.Danny's my real name.I'm 38 years old and sent him a 3 page letter.Do you think maybe the letter was too long or too heavy because I sent a pic. A clean one and nothing bad.I attached 2 stamps in the letter.I kept checking my mail all these weeks with excitement.Darn it! I know I paid enough postage because I went to the post office ot make sure.I live in Long Island,NY.

Did you put 2 stamps in the envelope? If you did, that's contraband, not allowed. This prison's mailroon is like no other prison he's been too, very strict on everything, as sometimes they'll send the letter back, and sometimes it just seems to dissappear!
I can usually send 5 pages and 3 pictures for one stamp on the envelope and it makes it there.

I bet Michael will never want to see another "Ramen Noodle" snack as long as he lives! I heard how Ramen Noodles are like gold in prison. The prisoners will do anything for those. "I wonder what they'd do for a Klondike bar?" All kidding aside I sure hope Michael stays clean and healthy because not many people can find anyone to care about them when they get out of prison. I can't imagine spending almost 15 years in prison! It must've been even more difficult for Michael because of his well known personality,being gay and club fame. I can only imagine how relieved he's going to be once he gets in a car in gets driven to the city! I do support what he did but who really cares about a dirt bag drug dealer? Please put my full name in this blog. I'm not afraid to voice my opinion on drug dealers.My father was a cocaine dealer in the 80's and early 90's. What a scum bag! They reap what they sow! I just hope Michael stays clean and keeps himself away from all that'll try to use him or not give a crap about his best interest. The first 6 months will be difficult with people like the ones that'll try to surround themselves around him with bad motives. I'm sure he's smart enough to figure out who's out for him and who's just out for themselves. I just hope he's not gonna end up on any new episodes of "Celebrity Rehab". I'm 40 years old and remember seeing Michael in the news back in 1996 when all that crap went down. Live and Learn Michael! STAY STRONG!

i was up late last night watching a bunch of his videos in youtube.he really is lucky to be getting out soon because i saw the part in one of those videos where he admitted to killing that guy and he was laughing about it!the video was taken a few months before he was arrested.the one where he's wearing the usa t-shirt and joking about it. it freaked me out.i was blown away.i hope the people that let him out dont ever see that.he seemed like he didn't even care. i'm still creeped out about it. OMG

Just remember that he was still using drugs in those interviews! He's nothing like that now.

That scene in Party Monster, where he's laughing about killing Angel, was not supposed to be a part of the documentary. The camera crew was testing the equipment & they told Michael to say something random to see if everything was working properly. Being on drugs, the first thing that he spit out of his mouth was admitting to the murder. This was just Michael at the time. Of course, since he said that, they definitely included it in the movie because it was so shocking (hence the title "shockumentary.") Michael told me this when I visited him last.
Like Lovepurple had said, he's nothing like that now! Even though he may have been laughing at his crime, there has never been any part in his life that he found it funny. That movie is very deceiving...but of course, it has to be that way or no one would watch it.
You will definitely learn a lot about the real Michael through his letters and if you visit him.

I GOT MY LETTER FROM MICHAEL!! I cannot tell you how deeply his letter hit home(and his handwriting isnt that bad, the cursive-print mix is easy for me to read, understand for some it isnt! Im so glad I was so honest and told him my story, I think it just helped him get a pic of me, and comfortable to open up. Needless to say I am writing another one tonight!! Im glad he was so happy to get my letter, I hope he's being cheered up by others letters, THE MORE HONEST YOU ARE, THE BETTER!!! He returned my letter, as in it was actually DATED THE DAY HE RECEIVED MINE!! I found a new friend, and I'm just real glad I took that first step, and that he was sooo happy to have gotten it due to.... Well, he's a real good guy, sounds like he's his old self(the great part.. MINUS DRUGS!!), and sure knows how to connect with someone!! GOOD LUCK PEOPLE, WRITE THAT FIRST LETTER!!

He does have a back problem, and now a Collarbone problem which he's receiving Physical Therapy for, and may need surgery if the therapy doesn't work.

how in the hell did he hurt his collarbone? does anyone have any recent pics of him? i wonder how he looks.

I have no memory! I can't remember if he hurt it before he got to Franklin. It's just that treatment for injuries doesn't happen until many months later, but for once it seems like he has a good Physical Therapist.
Michael is very sensitive about how he looks, as he thinks he looks old! Well, the last time I saw him he looked like he was in his early 30's, or maybe younger! He rarely takes a photo in prison, but if he does, it's only with a promise that it doesn't go out to the public. So, we all have to wait till he gets out!
