With the oppressive heat, Michael needs encouragement!

Much of the USA has been going through a heatwave, and that does include where Michael is. It can be real bad for us out here with no A/C, but for Michael, he has no air flow, no window, no fan, no cold drinks, nothing to help him get through this heat and humidity! He is suffering, and it's so hard to keep him going sometimes in a letter, so I'm hoping some others could help me out and give him some extra encouragement right now! It's around 100 degrees in his Cell, and the humidity is unbearable.

Anything you can say to him to lift his spirits or make him laugh would help!

Thanks!

I've known about Michael's situation and this blog for a while... I've always been too nervous to write- but now I'm going to finally do it.
As for sending money so he can afford stamps; am I able to just put it in the envelope along with the letter? That's probably a dumb question, but I'd really like to start writing to him even if he decides to not write back. I'm sure the few bucks help either way.
If that question has already been answered maybe you could direct me to that page?
    Thanks.

You can send a check or money order in the same envelope with your letter. You need to put his full name and DIN# on it along with your full name and address. I think some people toss  some cash in, but he may not get it. It's also best to write in that letter that you enclosed money and how much so that he's aware of it.

Congrats for finally taking the plunge and writing to him!

Oh dear... Another even stranger question from me.
Please believe the seriousness of these questions.

Do you know if Michael prefers typed or hand-written letters? And what sort of length is appropriate for this sort of thing? I could write a novel to him- but I'm sure that's a bit much.

(I'm still working out what to say. It's surprisingly difficult to find the right words even though all I want to say could be chapters.)

        Thanks again.

I sent a money order to Michael recently and he did receive and cash it and was VERY thankful! Previously, before he was transferred to Pine City, I'd sent cash. Each time I send any type of currency, I make sure to let him know in the body of the letter exactly what I'd sent and in what form it had been sent to make sure he receives it.

For what it's worth, the last letter from Michael lifted my spirits in that it was much more positive than the previous two. He is focusing on making the best of the situation.

I am gonna start writting him too I have studied everything about him and I think he is still famous atleast in my eyes. I watch James St James on youtube and watched the documentary and the movie and loved them both for some sick reason probably Michael would laugh because I loved the sick parts and the good. I am stuck in a bunk town just like he was when he started. My dream city is Seattle and the club scene their not New York so maybe when he gets out he will change sides and come out west. I heard he wants to make movies or do something big again I would love to write him and pick at his brain and let him pick mine. I watch shows on how bad prison is and how New York is the worst place to be locked up in so maybe I can get him to laugh or spend some time writting atleast. Maybe a autobiography on his life would be a nice way to spend his time untill his release in 2013 cause I dont think those a-holes will parole him. Well I guess I am rambling and should go get some stamps and start writting tonight.

I wrote and sent it off today hopefully he gets it in the next couple of days. I wrote alot because there seems nothing to do but sleep, read, walk around when you get a chance or talk to someone. Also I know how he is feeling when I was a kid though I got locked up and letters from the outside where the most important thing I got while inside custody. I lived a simular life like him with alot of drugs and friends and so on my own little circle that I loved. We all grew up and changed ideas now we drink only and go to clubs. So yeah I dont just know alot about him or have alot to say I know how he felt outside when everything was great and awesome and now that he is inside somewhere you wish everyday you could go home because there is nothing to do so you are constantly making plans for when you do get out. I also love that you care enough about him to keep this going and keep people updated you are a incredible person and must be a great friend of Michaels!

I think I will send him a card soon to try to cheer him up. I sent him cash for stamps before I read about sending him a money order. I mentioned how much in the letter too. Hopefully he gets it. I don't want to make excuses, but it could be the heat, or he's out of stamps. It's very nice of you to send him magazines, but please tell him in a letter (mailed separately) what magazines you send him as they are just given to him, he doesn't know who sends them. I worry since I try to get people to write and send magazines! It's just with no phone calls while in Southport, he's just not the same!  We used to talk so much, and he's such a social person, being without a phone is a big deal for him. I used to ask him on the phone if he got a letter from someone and he'd let me know the same day or next, as he does keep track of the letters he gets.

thanks to Brent and Lance for writing letters and encouraging others to do the same. right now Michael is a bit down. the heat, humidity and some uncertainties lay heavy on him.

So, I was contemplating writing to Michael. Can I call him Mike?

He seems like a very interesting human being, despite everything. I just don't know what I would say to him.

Has he read any David Sedaris? I might send him an old book.

I'm also in a rough spot in my life, and would love to get a chance to speak with him regularly. Does he have e-mail, or do they only allow snail mail?

    Thanks!

PS - Who is the person running this blog? A personal friend, family member, or what? Thanks!

Yes, you can call him Mike! You should write, and tell him about yourself. You have to ask him what books he likes, as I just know he asks for True Crime, but maybe you can get him interested in something new! Right now we only have snail mail, but once he's out of Southport he'll be able to phone people again, and is allowed to have 15 people on his phone list. (we pay for the calls, very cheap though)  No email! I wish!

I run the blog, and I'm a friend of his.

Odd question - how would I send mail out to him? I've, quite literally, never sent a letter in my life, much less to prison.

Do I have to send it via post office, my mail box, or...? What stamps do I need? Do I need to send him stamps in order for him to reply to me?

I can send my letter out as early as tomorrow once I figure all of this out!

That sounds so weird, you never sent a letter? You must be young! I never realized that because of the internet some people would NEVER write a letter!

Well, you need to write him the letter, I'll help with the envelope.

Per prison rules, you must have your full name and address on the top left corner of the envelope. Michael's full address (see below) goes on the bottom right corner of the envelope. The stamp goes in the upper right corner.

You can't send him stamps, the prison doesn't allow it, but you can send him a money order and he can buy them there. If you send a money order, once again your name and address must be on it along with Michael's name and number.

Some home mail boxes have a flag on them, and you put it up when you have a letter in there for pick-up. or, You can bring it to the Post Office, or find a big mailbox on the street.

          I hope this helps! Here's his address;

Because I'd like to get him some stamps, I'll have to wait until thursday, but I'm also planning on sending him some books and such after we send a few letters back and forth. I have a big stack of them for him!

There's not a money limit, but sending over 100.00 doesn't look good, as they may think he's into drugs. On the money order your name and addy, and his name and number which is 97A6595.

On the envelope please also put your name and full addy as he will not get it any other way.

I'm glad you found the blog! It's much better when Michael is in a prison where he can phone his friends, as more happens in his life. The "Shockumentary" is a better tale, I feel, than the movie. If you get the opportunity, find a copy of the book "Disco Bloodbath" (or it's more accessible incarnation "Party Monster") and give it a read! James St. James did a FANTASTIC JOB, in my humble opinion.
