Holiday message from Michael Alig
This is a Holiday message from Michael, in his own words. He wanted to explain why he can't send out Holiday cards to all of you.
Christmas is normally a time I look forward to, sending out cards & being able to return some of the positivity & warm wishes I receive through out the year. Unfortunately, due to my current situation, I'm presently unable to do so. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been writing & supporting me during this difficult time.
Things are actually beginning to look up. I am about to receive a time cut (in 18 days) , then another one in 37 days after that. I'll be out of Southport definitely before the end of April.
Besides that, Esther sent me another batch of pages of my book to work on, so I'll have something to keep myself busy for a while. I have a visit scheduled for Christmas and Christmas Eve, so I won't be alone on the Holidays. All the exercising I've been doing is really paying off. I've lost my tummy and actually have a six-pack for the first time in my life! Now all I have to do is keep it up after I leave Southport.
I have a ton of great books to read, which will make the next 4 months go by quickly. And I'm coming up with ideas for paintings to make after I leave the Box. I can't wait to be able to paint and to listen to music again! Those are the 2 things that I miss the most.
It was hard at first, facing having to come here… when I was so close to going home. I didn't think I'd ever be able to accept it. But over time, and the closer I get to leaving, I've been able to make peace with my situation. It's actually not as bad as I'd feared. In fact, as I look around at my neighbors, many of whom get no mail, no visits, & have no books to read, I feel pretty fortunate. I wish I could express my gratitude by sending out Christmas cards, but since I can't, let me say Thank you everyone, for being there…& I hope you'll all have a great Holiday!

So he isn't even allowed to send letters to people right now? Or is it just Christmas cards he can't send to people? Well I'm glad to hear he is doing fine at least.

He can't buy cards, so he can't send them. He still receives and sends letters.

just a quick note to express my heartbreak in this situation. I admire Michaels strength in the face of such adversity. He said he had lots of reading material. is there anything else he needs I could send him over the holidays to cheer him up. What is allowed and if it is reading material what do you recommend. I hope Michael is grateful for all the wonderful things you do for him and us keeping us updated

If he says he has enough reading material, then he may. He likes magazines, but different people send him some from time to time. He does like true crime books. If you are looking and see something you think may appeal to him, then get it.

I am a big fan, but not a friend. You know him personally so i thought i would get advice. I will take your advice and pick up some true crime. any other ideas feel free to let me know. thinking of him in Canada. Merry christmas to both of you

It's hard to buy for him now since he's only allowed books and magazines. Maybe for his B'day in April we'll be able to get him many more things!

I wish i could be there with a bow and ribbon tied around me for his Xmas gift. I hate that here it is another holiday and he seems to not get any more rights than before and he has come so far with being in there... It seems that ive counted the days for his release for so long that it has done nothing but make the time go slower because i realize it day by day... I just want this to be the last time he has to be away for the holidays...

I really hope as well this is the last holiday in there! The past 3 years he's been so close to getting out, and I really can't start thinking of all his frustration and I don't blame him, it drives me crazy as well.

Yes, he still writes letters, but feels bad about not being able to send out personal cards to everyone. Last yr I made up a paper card for him with his art work on it, we couldn't do that this year as he can't have it there.

for those of you that did not know this, meikel does speak some german and understands most of what i write. he writes to his aunt doris in germany and all is written in german for her as she does not speak english that well.

You take a chance sending cash, but whenever you send money always tell him how much you sent so he can make sure it gets into his account. letter, card, & money together should be fine.

i jst want 2 ask you for advice... i know many ppl are asking the same questions but i must make sure what's the best way to send magazines, money and pics to Michael. should i send a letter 1st and then everything separately just with a note in the letter what ii sending or i can post everything in one bigger pack? are there any restrictions in that prison about size of packing? is it enough if i send money so he can buy what he needs and how much i can send? should i send postal order aswell or if i send money he will be able to buy them? im from UK so i ve already read that someone asked on post office to change pounds for dollars on postal stamps so it should help. Thank you all for help.

I forgot about you telling Michael what you sent, just tell him in the letter you send to him at that time or after, as books and mags have to be approved so it takes longer for him to receive them.

Has Michael have any kind of idea when he's getting out of prison? With the good time added and all. I'm hoping soon. I was hoping for late 2012 but maybe 2013. ughh

It could be in 2012. With Good Time, they give it, take it away, give it, goes back and forth! He had enough to get out already but the last person in Albany that had to finalize it said no. Right now it's been taken away, but after her does the 6 month drug program he'll have it again! He also sees the Parole Board 7/12.

He better get out then! If they give him a no again and he has to stay in past 2012, I'll be so shocked!!!! Enough is enough with him being there. I'll be sending a letter with my pic this week. Need to look for an envelope big enough for my 4x6 pic.
Can we put a pic that size in a letter?
The letter is 1 page front and back but the pic is added. Hope it's still ok to add pics at this prison.

A regular envelope #10 fits a 4x6 pic, I send them all the time.

Michael we wish u cud b out for the holidays, but we know u cant, but from all of us ppl who care about u, you r here in our hearts! U are not forgotten! Hi Lovepurple. Do you know if Michael is out of stamps atm? I sent him a letter but i'm not sure if he got it, if not i'd love to have this letter back, i don't want it to 'disappear' especially that i wrote some private stuff and put money for him. What USUALLY happens to the letters that are not "allowed" for some reason up there?

Did you put your full name and complete return address on the envelope? His name and #? Lots of mail is rejected when not addressed properly. Sometimes he pays and has them sent to me, then I figure out who it's from and mail it out again, correctly. You should write another letter and make sure he got the money, but he does get delayed from lack of stamps which at times he'll have a stack of letters waiting to be mailed once he's allowed to buy more.
Some rejected letters are thrown away, but if it's because you sent contraband then you usually get a letter from the prison with the return.

Give it more time. With the holidays, the prison staff has more days off, meaning no mail room, so things get backed up.
